Aero Engine and Nacelle Components

Smith's have adopted the latest technology utilising 3, 4 and 5 axis machining techniques to produce components from exotic materials to demanding tolerances. Extensive investment has been and is continuing in CNC Machining Centres, Vertical Borers and Lathes which is backed up various ancillary machines and processes.
Prismatic type components are typically up a metre cube whereas ring type components are within 300mm to 3,000mm diameter range (for larger parts see the Aero Structures page). Aero-engine ring components machined include Oil Tanks, Gearboxes, Casings and Rings. Static and Rotating parts are machined and are located in the Turbine/Compressor, Hot/Cold section of an Aeroengine. In addition the company also machines Nacelle components which form the backbone of the Nacelle assembly.
The company is Rolls Royce Plc approved and have made components for the majority of large Fan aero-engine products. Current contracts include high volume CFM56 components for Snecma.
Materials machined include:
- Nickel based Alloys (i.e. Inconel 718)
- Titanium, Exotic Steels, Stainless steel
- Aluminium, Magnesium and Waspaloy amongst many others.
